- Slavens School
On Friday, November 16th from 9:00 — 11:00am, Friends of Slavens School (FOSS) will be hosting Grandparents Day. Grandparents will have the chance to experience the amazing community of learners and leaders we have here at Slavens. All grandparents with a grandchild in Kindergarten through 8th grade can come for an all-school Leader In Me assembly, time in the classroom, optional tour of the school; to see our enrichments like music, art, and STEM; and they may also stay for an optional $5 Thanksgiving lunch with their grandchild(ren).
If your child has someone in his or her life — an aunt, a great-uncle, or a beloved family friend — who fills the role of grandparent, feel free to invite that person in place of a grandmother or grandfather.
We ask that all parents who have a grandparent attending sign up via the website – so that we can be ready to welcome them on November 17th. You can sign up here: http://foss.ptapal.com/foss_grandparents.asp.

What if I have more than one student?
You may spend time in all their classrooms! Each classroom will have a parent or middle school student volunteer who will help you navigate the school.
I'm not a grandparent, but I am special to a Slavens student. May I attend?
Absolutely! While we titled this day, 'Grandparents Day', it truly is a day to celebrate those who are important in the life of a Slavens student. We recognize that many grandparents are not local and thus unable to attend this event. Thank you for stepping in and attending - you mean the world to a student and we want to celebrate you!
How will I find my student's classroom?
After the assembly and Principal's welcome, please remain in the gymnasium. We will dismiss grandparents based on the grade level of their student. If you are not sure what grade level your student is in, we will let you know during check-in or you may ask one of our many parent or middle school student volunteers.
How does the lunch work?
You may share in a Thanksgiving lunch with your grandchild or grandchildren at 11am in our cafeteria. You may purchase your lunch for $5 (cash or check only).
Is this a fundraiser?
Grandparents Day is a celebration of the community engagement that makes this school so special. Community engagement takes place in many forms: reading to your grandchild or Slavens student, taking them to their activities, volunteering in their school classrooms or on field trips, volunteering in the library or the drop off lane at school, as well as donating to the FOSS mission - that every student deserves a well-rounded and diverse education that involves music, dance, art, physical education, foreign language and STEM. Through fundraising, FOSS supports the teacher salaries, cutting edge technology, and the supplies necessary to ensure a well-rounded education for all children. We welcome and recognize all the above forms of community engagement. No financial donation is necessary to attend this event. If you would like to make a financial donation to support the FOSS mission, please visit www.friendsofslavens.org to donate online, or you may donate via check or credit card at the event.
